Job Title: Mechanical Designer

Location: St. Louis Area
Location Type: On-Site
Company: Bolt Automation

About Us

Bolt Automation designs and builds custom robotic automation systems for manufacturers across a wide range of industries, including consumer products, food, pharmaceuticals, plastics, automotive, and industrial manufacturing.

Unlike companies that produce standardized equipment, every project at Bolt Automation is unique. Our team designs and builds robotic palletizers, packaging equipment, bag handling systems, machine tending cells, custom end-of-arm tooling, conveyors, and specialty automation tailored to each customer’s application.

We are a growing engineering-driven company where creativity, innovation, and practical problem solving are valued every day.

Position Overview

Bolt Automation is seeking a Mechanical Designer to join our engineering team. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys designing custom machinery from concept through manufacturing and seeing their designs come to life on the shop floor.

The Mechanical Designer will be responsible for designing robotic automation systems, custom end-of-arm tooling, machine frames, conveyors, and precision mechanical assemblies using SOLIDWORKS. You will work closely with controls engineers, robotic programmers, machinists, fabricators, and customers to develop reliable, manufacturable solutions for challenging automation projects.

No two days are the same—every project presents new engineering challenges and opportunities to innovate.

Responsibilities

  • Design custom automation equipment and robotic systems using SOLIDWORKS.
  • Design robotic end-of-arm tooling (vacuum, servo, pneumatic, and mechanical grippers).
  • Create machine layouts, weldments, sheet metal, machined components, and assemblies.
  • Generate detailed manufacturing drawings and Bills of Materials.
  • Select commercially available mechanical and pneumatic components.
  • Collaborate with controls and robotics engineers throughout project development.
  • Support fabrication, assembly, and machine startup by resolving design issues.
  • Participate in customer design reviews and internal engineering meetings.
  • Assist with prototype development and product testing.
  • Continuously improve existing designs for manufacturability, reliability, and serviceability.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS.
  • Experience designing custom machinery or industrial equipment preferred.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, welding, sheet metal, and assembly.
  • Experience with pneumatic components, linear motion, bearings, gearboxes, and power transmission.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to customer sites (typically less than 10%).

Preferred Experience

Experience with one or more of the following is a plus:

  • Robotic automation
  • ABB or Fanuc robotic systems
  • End-of-arm tooling design
  • Material handling equipment
  • Packaging machinery
  • Palletizing systems
  • Machine safety and guarding
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • PDM or product data management systems

Why Join Bolt Automation?

At Bolt Automation, you’ll design equipment that is actually built—not concepts that sit on a shelf. From initial sketches to seeing a robot running your design on a customer’s production floor, you’ll be involved throughout the entire engineering process.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • Health insurance
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Retirement plan
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Small team environment with significant design ownership
  • Opportunity to work with the latest robotic automation technologies

Is This Position Right for You?

This position is a great fit if you enjoy:

  • Solving new engineering challenges every week.
  • Designing machines that have never been built before.
  • Seeing your designs move from concept to fabrication to customer production.
  • Working directly with robots, automation, and manufacturing.
  • Taking ownership of projects from initial concept through startup.

If you’re looking for a role designing the same product over and over, this probably isn’t the right fit. If you enjoy creating custom automation that solves real manufacturing problems, we’d love to talk with you.
